Chapter Ten

They’d passed through customs and immigration and were on their way back to San Antonio, when Luz cried, “You want me to what?”

If he wasn’t so serious, he would have smiled at Luz’s outrage.

“Switching genders has been working for Alma.” The very reason he’d gotten the idea of how best to protect Luz. If he hadn’t been able to tell the bartender was really a woman, it would be possible to fool others. “If you do a good enough job at changing your looks, passing yourself off as a guy will work for you, too. And your pretending to be my little brother is the only way I’m going to let you come with me.”

He thought she might threaten to go alone and so was surprised when she asked, “What about you? Aren’t you going to change your looks so no one recognizes you?”

“Of course,” he said. “It’s all part of the plan.”

Anyone could show up at the ranch—one of the men responsible for dragging him off to Mexico…one of the guards…Maribel the madam…El Jefe himself…

“So if I disguise myself as a man,” Luz went on, “you’ll disguise yourself as a woman?”

Ever since he’d kissed Luz, her tone had held an edge to it no matter what he said to her, so he just backed off and took refuge in silence.

She’d been right—that kiss had been meant to scare her off. He figured after their disastrous night together, the last thing she’d want would be more of the same. So he’d tried to put that fear in her mind, hoping she would realize she was in over her head.

Instead, she’d responded to him with abandon and he’d been tempted to take her right there in Pilar’s bedroom. Thankfully, he’d come to his senses. He didn’t need to get any more involved with her than he already was.

Now what?

He was stuck with Luz Delgado—a brave albeit annoying albatross around his neck. He could bluff all he wanted, but in the end, he was responsible for her safety. An amateur could be trouble for him, could get him killed. Even if he backed out of his private mission, took Aaron’s advice and just let it alone, Luz would no doubt plunge ahead without him. He would like to think he could set her up in Crystal Springs and go out to the ranch for work himself, but he didn’t believe she would cooperate.

So he was stuck with her and with an uncomfortable situation of his own making. Just because he was beyond the McKenna legacy—beyond thinking he was going to find a soul mate like his siblings and cousins had—didn’t mean he didn’t have needs. That was all it was—physical attraction. No matter how bad an idea it would be, he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to make love to Luz under different circumstances.

So she wasn’t the only one on edge.

Quin could only hope that making her look like a boy would get his mind off what he fantasized doing to her.
