Chapter Ten
Theyâd passed through customs and immigration and were on their way back to San Antonio, when Luz cried, âYou want me to what?â
If he wasnât so serious, he would have smiled at Luzâs outrage.
âSwitching genders has been working for Alma.â The very reason heâd gotten the idea of how best to protect Luz. If he hadnât been able to tell the bartender was really a woman, it would be possible to fool others. âIf you do a good enough job at changing your looks, passing yourself off as a guy will work for you, too. And your pretending to be my little brother is the only way Iâm going to let you come with me.â
He thought she might threaten to go alone and so was surprised when she asked, âWhat about you? Arenât you going to change your looks so no one recognizes you?â
âOf course,â he said. âItâs all part of the plan.â
Anyone could show up at the ranchâone of the men responsible for dragging him off to Mexicoâ¦one of the guardsâ¦Maribel the madamâ¦El Jefe himselfâ¦
âSo if I disguise myself as a man,â Luz went on, âyouâll disguise yourself as a woman?â
Ever since heâd kissed Luz, her tone had held an edge to it no matter what he said to her, so he just backed off and took refuge in silence.
Sheâd been rightâthat kiss had been meant to scare her off. He figured after their disastrous night together, the last thing sheâd want would be more of the same. So heâd tried to put that fear in her mind, hoping she would realize she was in over her head.
Instead, sheâd responded to him with abandon and heâd been tempted to take her right there in Pilarâs bedroom. Thankfully, heâd come to his senses. He didnât need to get any more involved with her than he already was.
Now what?
He was stuck with Luz Delgadoâa brave albeit annoying albatross around his neck. He could bluff all he wanted, but in the end, he was responsible for her safety. An amateur could be trouble for him, could get him killed. Even if he backed out of his private mission, took Aaronâs advice and just let it alone, Luz would no doubt plunge ahead without him. He would like to think he could set her up in Crystal Springs and go out to the ranch for work himself, but he didnât believe she would cooperate.
So he was stuck with her and with an uncomfortable situation of his own making. Just because he was beyond the McKenna legacyâbeyond thinking he was going to find a soul mate like his siblings and cousins hadâdidnât mean he didnât have needs. That was all it wasâphysical attraction. No matter how bad an idea it would be, he couldnât help but wonder what it would be like to make love to Luz under different circumstances.
So she wasnât the only one on edge.
Quin could only hope that making her look like a boy would get his mind off what he fantasized doing to her.
